WOMEN INFLUENCER

“We need to keep changing the attitude that teaches men to feel threatened by the presence and success of women”-Barack Obama

To me, feminism means working towards achieving global gender equality. Everyone is born equal, regardless of gender, race, or sexuality. However, there are so many aspects of life in which people are not treated equally: politically, economically, legally, and socially. Feminism is about working against the systems built to keep certain groups of people oppressed and striving towards equality for everyone. Below are amazing words by Ex-President of United states:

We need to keep changing the attitude that raises our girls to be demure and our boys to be assertive, that criticizes our daughters for speaking out and our sons for shedding a tear. We need to keep changing the attitude that punishes women for their sexuality and rewards men for theirs. We need to keep changing the attitude that permits the routine harassment of women, whether they’re walking down the street. We need to keep changing the attitude that congratulates men for changing a diaper, stigmatizes full-time dads, and penalizes working mothers. We need to keep changing the attitude that values being confident, competitive, and ambitious in the workplace ― unless you’re a woman.... We need to keep changing a culture that shines a particularly unforgiving light on women and girls of color.

I wonder being an independent woman and having your own opinions people tend to assume you are against the status quo of being woman. I don’t want to sound like a stereotype like another woman just listening to irrational views of people which will impact individual’s emotional strength. I remember one of my so-called friend saying me “oh you know what this company hires woman even if you perform 50% well in interview”. I was like “LOL” first there’s no such thing in the talent industry and second it’s the way they look at it because they feel inferior when woman achieves more.

I'm all for equality, but I'm not a feminist," is something I used to say with great gusto as a teenage girl. I hesitated to use the f-word for years, because I was afraid that people would judge me but now their opinion doesn’t matter to me at all because their thinking is way low and we can’t change those orthodox values in them. When you know what kind of a personality you are you don’t have to explain it to people.

Perspective on equality:Patriarchy still exists and quite predominant in India. Specially with regards to marriage from a young age, girls are indoctrinated into the virtues of marriage, which itself contributes to maintaining and perpetuating traditional gender roles. Beyond a certain age, a man who remains unmarried is thought of as independent or intelligent, whereas a woman who remains unmarried is assumed to be desperate, at once a figure of pity and scorn. A woman who is strong-minded enough to forgo marriage and live out her own life is constantly made to doubt her resolve:

·       "Never say never..."

·       "You just need to find the right man..."

·       "There’s this great guy I’d like you to meet...”

Look nobody's perfect. In some facets of our lives we're heroes and in others we're shitty. It's always a WE decision, equal opportunity after marriage and no longer remains "I".

Yatra naryastu pujyante ramante tatra Devata,
yatraitaastu na pujyante sarvaastatrafalaah kriyaah
Where Women are honored, divinity blossoms there, and wherever women are dishonored, all action no matter how noble it may be, remains unfruitful.
