INHUMANE GENERATION

1.Technology juxtaposition

Today I was vouching through Netflix for a good documentary and I found “The social dilemma” documentary to be promising, relevant for this generation about how social media is making us get addicted to the feeds, ad’s, notifications, etc.. Consider this paradoxical question: since all tools are made by humans, must not all human-made tools express our humanity? Are tools and technologies inevitably humane because they’ve been made by humans, and thus are extensions of someone’s humanity? And so, bluntly, am I then also responsible for them despite my clear-eyed everyday sense that some innovations are humane while others are not?

The boundary between the human-made world and humans themselves is increasingly hard to draw.. Today, given the primacy of digital technology in mediating human experience, aren’t we species fundamentally shaped by personal technologies: past, present, future? So anticipation, foresight and understanding would seem to be essential for any ethical, sustainable approach to technological innovation. While this seems essentially impossible. There’s also the other nagging suspicion that when we reject a new tool as inhumane we sometimes do so in order to mount a celebration of our unique, and highly questionable, conception of the virtues and manifest destiny of our own species, or even our own selves. Yet any such conclusion should raise worries about a tendency to confuse one’s own values with a general, or universal, approach to responsible innovation.

Before we reflect on whether the above scenario is realistic, let us say together: humility first, before we applaud our good judgement.

2.Planet perspective

Are we too occupied in our lives that we overlooked the essence of sustainable development and conserving/ preserving planet for future generation?

Sustainable development is coined in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The whole concept has been upturned because of our past generations who didn’t protect or bother to be sustainable from every aspect but am not accusing them either, nevertheless even our generation doesn’t care to protect the planet, who are still in their comfort zones, running behind petty obsessions without having wisdom of contentment. With WFH being the new norm, Individual’s life is in chaos and lacking social awareness with so called overrated “busy” term and sounds like people don’t have time to think about personal life, social issues, environment. This past week has been so dreadful predominantly in California with the wildfire’s everywhere and unhealthy air to breathe on top off Covid. At one point it started to feel we are on Mars or may be that doom’s day is nearby or was it the result of our past actions. The whole concept of wildfire, covid is making us realize the importance of having sense of responsibility towards sustainable development. It kind of astonishes me to see how people are still not comprehending the fact that we have become the destroyers of environment. Be it wasting electricity, using plastic, tissue papers, wasting water, deforestation and what not.

Why are we not evaluating what we are doing and how we are responsible for abolishing the planet? How inhumane our thinking is which is unswervingly impacting wildlife. Don’t you feel that it’s high time to create awareness amongst our generation to preserve and save environment by doing it small.

I would like to know everyone’s thoughts/notions/opinions/ideas on how we can improve the current situation and be a responsible inhabitant in saving our earth?

  1. What about traditional cars put out a lot of exhaust, which pollutes the air ? I would say bike more and drive less unless it is warranted.

    1. Practically you cannot bike upto 30 or 40 miles unless you love biking or you're an athlete. It kinda makes sense to bike or walk for shorter distances that way at-least we are reducing the fossil fuel emissions.Encouraging public transport would be an option too but this COVID has taken away the flexibility of using public transport.
In mere future if electric cars produced are cheaper would be an other way to reduce the emissions.

    2. That's the problem. Prior to modern travel infrastructures such as railways and highways, most people did not travel very much at all.

  2. We have reached an Era, where we have done damage to the Nature in such a way that it can't be recovered that easily. There is nothing any government or a country can do to bring a change to save the disasters around the globe. We as an individual must realize the importance of protecting the earth and bring this change. Every little thing we do in our lives make a greater impact on whether saving or destroying the earth and its life forms.

The wildlife, trees and Nature they dont need our protection or recognition as an endangered or extinct species, they just need to be treated with respect as equally as humans. And we should always keep in mind that earth equally belongs to every tree and Animal as it belongs to Humans.

  3. Many of the problems are related - sustainability, poverty, inequality, unemployment etc. You cannot ask a person earning 12$ an hour to buy an electric vehicle... Neither can you expect someone working at oil rig to quit their jobs without showing an alternative... A holistic approach is very important now... People are lot more educated about climate change than ever before.. we still have a long way to go

    1. People are lot more educated but doesn't have awareness about how tiny things are impacting the planet. For eg: We leave the sockets unplugged after every use it leaves humongous carbon prints down the line. Therefore if we were to start small unplug them after every use.
If it is in our reach to do something better for the planet then definitely we need to be sustainable.

  4. We are just the descendants to this planet and there's no guarantee that everyone who lives on this planet is gonna be a centenarian and we are just a collection of atoms that come together for a Brief period of time and then fall apart.Everyone knows this, but most of the times we overuse the resources like water that costed us nothing. We cannot blame anyone BCoz we are the reason for the incidents that took place till now.Atleast we need to be careful frol now Coz if this continues there will be nothing left to the future generations...
